I’m Italian-American; this means that I’m American with Italian relatives. These relatives are on my Dad’s side. His parents (and my grandparents) are both Italian. My grandma’s name is Odette. She was born in France and grew up in Luxembourg. As a girl, she spoke French, Italian and Luxembourgish. At home with her family, she spoke Italian. She had two siblings- an older brother whose name is Marcel, and a younger sister whose name is Flory. My grandpa didn’t have siblings, he was an only child. He was born in a small village outside of Lucca that’s called Bozzano. When he was really small, his Dad moved to the United States in order to find a job. His Mom stayed in Bozzano with him. At a certain point in his childhood, my great-grandma became sick with tuberculosis. She was isolated from her family and from Enzo for many months, and in the end, unfortunately she died. Since my great-grandfather lived in the United States, an aunt of my grandpa’s brought Enzo there in order to reunite and live with his father. Enzo was only nine years old when he departed from Italy for the United States. He lived in the state of Nevada, and then when he was older, he became a soldier in the United States military. He returned to Europe to fight in World War II. My grandpa was put in Luxembourg, in the same village where my grandma lived. My great-grandparents heard of this American soldier who spoke Italian, (in fact who was Italian) and so they sent my grandma to his base in order to invite him to a dinner at their house. That dinner was the beginning of a long love story that lasted a lifetime. Their story obviously continued, but I’ll tell you that another time. The end.
